HOPE HAS A NEW ADDRESS: BUILDING THE FRAN AND RAY STARK CENTER AT HOMEBOY INDUSTRIES

Breaking ground, building futures in the heart of the city, Homeboy Industries celebrated the move into its new home, the Fran and Ray Stark Center, on October 2, 2007. A thousand friends helped Fr. Greg and Homeboy staff and clients “break bread” to open the new building.

Designed by Nestor + Gaffney architectural firm, the two-storey facility is 21,000 sq. ft. with an adjacent parking lot. Homeboy Bakery has 5,000 sq.ft., and Homegirl Café & Catering is located in about 4,500 sq.ft. The remaining space houses Homeboy Merchandise, Homeboy services and programs and administration.

The Capital Campaign Committee, chaired by Homeboy board member Carol Biondi, raised $8,500,000 for building construction, equipment and furnishings and $3,500,000 to underwrite start-up costs for the Bakery, Café and other enlarged programs planned for the new facility.

Board members David V. Adams, Sr. and David G. Price led the Facility Construction Committee, which found the site and guided the planning for the facility. Groundbreaking was held in March 2006.

The L.E. Waters Construction Company managed the 16-month construction schedule through rain and heat. We have a welcoming home where Homeboy Industries will be known for its accomplishments and for helping young people who are seeking a way out of the turmoil of their lives.
